Denmark, along with the majority of the world\u2019s countries, is miles away from meeting the agreed-upon goals for our nature and biodiversity. If we are to address both the Danish and global biodiversity crises, it will require sweeping change across all sectors. That is the short message from IPBES. We must assess the value of our natural world and incorporate it into policy decisions in a different way than we do today. This is the focal point of a new symposium organized by IPBES in Denmark, based on the IPBES report on values. You can also read more about possible actions to address the biodiversity crisis on a new website developed by IPBES in Denmark. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Nature in Denmark has historically fared poorly. Several reports in recent years have confirmed this. Within the EU, we rank last among member states in terms of protected natural areas, and the quality of our habitats is also among the worst in the EU. Politically, we\u2014in line with the rest of the world\u2014have committed to halting this decline, restoring nature, and doing our part to ensure that 30% of the EU\u2019s and the world\u2019s land area consists of protected natural areas by 2030. <\/p>\n\n

Given the current policy measures, however, it is, to say the least, doubtful whether Denmark will be able to meet its obligations within the allotted timeframe. According to the IPBES report on<\/a> the \u201cValues Assessment<\/em>, \u201d<\/em> one of the major challenges at the global level is that political assessments and initiatives fail to take into account the values provided by nature. <\/p>\n\n

Today, only a narrow selection of the many values that nature provides is taken into account in political and economic decision-making processes. This applies, for example, to the material market value of biomass, whereas the value of other indispensable ecosystem services, as well as recreational, social, and cultural values, is completely excluded from the calculations. At the same time, economic growth is, unfortunately, not decoupled from the degradation of our natural environment and ecosystems. <\/p>\n\n

New Symposium on Biodiversity and Valuation<\/h3>\n\n

Political priorities are largely based on economic calculations, and it is therefore necessary to incorporate the value of nature and biodiversity into socioeconomic assessments. To shed light on this topic, a new symposium will be held on June 16, 2023, focusing specifically on the value and valuation of nature. The symposium is being held with a grant from the 15 June Foundation. <\/p>\n\n

Among the symposium participants are Professor Unai Pascual, lead author of the IPBES report, the Basque Center for Climate Change in Spain and the Center for Development and the Environment at the University of Bern in Switzerland, as well as Mette Termansen, a professor at the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen and a Danish co-author of the report.<\/p>\n\n

The biodiversity crisis can be solved<\/h3>\n\n

The biodiversity crisis is complex, and preserving and restoring nature requires a wide range of actions. Among other things, this will require that we be willing to adapt and act on the knowledge that is currently being developed internationally. Despite the need for sweeping change across all sectors, the overarching message remains that the biodiversity crisis can be reversed. This is also the message conveyed by IPBES on Denmark\u2019s new website\u2014a so-called \u201cwebflow\u201d\u2014which was created to give Danes an overview of some of the threats posed by the biodiversity crisis and the options for action. <\/p>\n\n

On the website, you\u2019ll gain insight into how the loss of natural habitats, the overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change have affected global biodiversity, among other things. You can also read about how making more room for wild nature and creating natural, gradual transitions between natural areas will improve the connectivity of the Danish landscape, including how untouched forests support habitats for a myriad of species. <\/p>\n\n

Finally, the website offers insight into why it is necessary for finance ministries and other institutions to begin incorporating the many different values of nature and biodiversity into socioeconomic analyses and individual sectoral policies.<\/p>\n\n

The website and webflow were designed by Emil Willumsen. IPBES in Denmark developed the concept and wrote the texts, while the scientific quality assurance was conducted by Professor Carsten Rahbek (University of Copenhagen), Senior Consultant Dennis Lisbjerg (DTU Aqua), and Associate Professor Sara Egemose (University of Southern Denmark). <\/p>\n\n
