Research Call: Biodiversity and Transformative Change

Research Call: Biodiversity and Transformative Change

A new opportunity for researchers and other subject matter experts has been launched by the European biodiversity partnership Biodiversa+ through a Research Call on biodiversity and transformative change.

This call for proposals is international and aims to support interdisciplinary and innovative projects that can strengthen the knowledge base for safeguarding and restoring biodiversity through the green transition. The call for proposals encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative thinking and does not have a predefined theme. Nor is the call limited to specific sectors or geographic areas.

The request for proposals focuses on two key aspects:

  • To enhance understanding of the relationships and connections between biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution as pressing crises.
  • To identify and analyze transformative processes that can help conserve biodiversity and address the threats that cause the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The new call for research proposals is yet another example of how the topic and concept of “transformative change”—which in Danish can be translated, for example, as “radical change”— is gaining ever greater attention and significance as a necessary paradigm shift to avert the biodiversity crisis.

IPBES defines transformative change as the need for fundamental and far-reaching changes across the economy, society, and the environment. Transformative Change is the theme of the upcoming global consensus report from IPBES, which is expected to be adopted in December.

The deadline for the mandatory expression of interest (pre-proposal) is November 8, 2024.
